Stamp Riot
L.A.: "Three African-American activists upset about
the Mexican government's issuance of a postage stamp they consider racist
were arrested Tuesday while blocking the sidewalk in front of the Mexican
Consulate.
The men were among a half-dozen black leaders protesting Mexican President Vicente Fox's refusal to recall the stamp. It honors cartoonist Sixto Valencia Burgos, whose most famous character, Memin Pinguin, has exaggerated lips and bug eyes.
Part of a growing chorus of civil-rights leaders condemning the stamp, Ali also called on Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to denounce the stamp, saying it was urgent at a time when racial tensions are running high among black and Latino students."
Brothas and sisthas get a grip on yourselves. This stamp is not from the U.S. Fight the fight at home! If you feel strongly about racism let's start the fight were it really matters. The U.S. is the one with a history of slavery. In the 60's Jim Crow was still in effect. White Americans created Sambo, Coon Porter and Mammy and many more with racial intent.
Mexico has a different history. It has a different form of racism. There are plenty, un chingo, of dark colored Mexicans. Natives of nerby countries such as Belize and Honduras make their home in Mexico. Black come in many different nationalities even Mexicans.
Memin Pinguin racist is not.
